Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) involves the application of a solution, Levulan, to the skin followed by a laser or intense pulsed light treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for precancerous actinic keratoses. This treatment uses a light-activated drug, Levulan, which penetrates the skin and targets pre-cancerous lesions.

How Photodynamic Therapy Works

Levulan Application: The drug is applied to the skin and allowed to penetrate for 60-90 minutes.

Light Activation: After absorption, a special light activates the Levulan, which destroys the pre-cancerous cells.

Reaction: The activation causes a mild sunburn-like reaction, followed by skin peeling over 4-5 days.

Areas of Treatment:

PDT can be applied not only to the face but also to other areas prone to sun damage, such as the chest, arms, and hands.

Treatment Schedule:

Frequency: Typically, 2-4 treatments are required, spaced 2-4 weeks apart.
Maintenance: Follow-up treatments are recommended to maintain results. The frequency of these sessions can vary from every 4 months to 2 years, depending on individual needs.

What to Expect During Treatment:

Pre-Treatment Photos: Taken to monitor progress.
Paperwork: Consent forms and a brief medical history questionnaire.
Skin Preparation: The skin is prepped with an Acetone scrub.
Levulan Application: Applied and left to absorb for 60-90 minutes.
Anesthetic (if needed): Depending on the light source, a topical anesthetic may be applied for comfort.
Total Duration: The entire procedure can take 2-3 hours.

What are your hours of operation?

Our current hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM, and Friday, 8:30 AM to 4 PM. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Please suggest any new hours if needed.
